I heard an item on last night’s local news about the many airports around the country that have discontinued the security guards at baggage claim areas in order to cut costs. No employee looks at the baggage claim checks any more here in Portland, or in Seattle or many large cities around the country. There are gangs who walk in off the street, pick luggage off the wheel, and walk out with it.
Those with black suitcases or other common types that come through baggage claims by the hundreds are especially at risk because the thief can easily say it was a mistake. You’re advised to pack anything valuable into your carryon luggage and, once you land, to hurry to the baggage claim area. If traveling for the holidays, don’t pack gifts in your luggage, and if possible, send them ahead by mail.
Still another reason air travel has become far too difficult for the likes of me!
